Intrauterine insemination or artificial insemination (IUI)

This is a process that assists natural conception and is performed instead of correctly timed intercourse. This is not IVF.

Sperm is processed and concentrated in the embryology laboratory by scientists. The improved sample is then placed directly into the uterine cavity during an awake procedure in the clinic. A vaginal speculum is inserted to visualise the cervix and a very fine tube is inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity to aid insertion of the sample. There is often mild cramping after this procedure.

IUI is indicated in the following scenarios:

  • In conjunction with tracked cycles or ovulation induction
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Patients having difficulty with intercourse or timing intercourse
  • Donor sperm
  • Mild male factor infertility

IUI should not be used where there are blocked fallopian tubes or in moderate to severe male factor infertility.
